Product liability insurance, also known as Products-Completed Operations Insurance, is a must for companies that are involved in selling commercial goods.
This policy provides protection for your company relating to the manufacturing or sale of products, foods, medicines or other items.
This type of insurance provides protection against liabilities for losses due to injuries caused by malfunctions or defects in your products. This may include design defects or a failure to warn consumers about the dangers of using a product.
Product liability insurance is not a guarantee or warranty for the product, but rather the protection your business needs to deal with any incidents resulting from damage caused.
The long list of reasons for a potential lawsuit or claim includes design flaws, manufacturing flaws, and marketing or advertising flaws, which we'll outline below.

Production or Manufacturing Defect
Product Liability Insurance will protect against a defect with a product’s parts, materials, or assembly. An example of this could be customer who had purchased a pair running shoes from your business and recently slipped and hurt herself due to the heel not being securely fastened to the sole of the shoe.
Design Defect
This policy will protect you if your product has a defect with the way it is designed. This differs from a production or manufacturing flaw in that the cause for harm was not born out of faulty craftsmanship or production, but the product’s inherent design was dangerous in and of itself.
Marketing or Advertising Defect
Product liability insurance will protect your company if you did not adequately notify the consumer of all potential risks and harm that the product may cause. An example of an improper warning would be advertising the benefits of a cough medicine without a caution label detailing the possible side effects.
